The best food close to Weston without going into the city centre. The Marlborough Tavern is a genuine pub — not a restaurant that has retained the word 'tavern' for atmosphere — with consistently good cooking. The menu changes weekly and reflects what is available; the wine list is considered. Locals from both Weston and Lansdown use it as their main restaurant. Book ahead at weekends.

The Weston walk to the city centre comes out near the lower end of Julian Road, 10 minutes from Café Retro on York Street. If you are walking in from Weston, this is a natural breakfast or brunch stop before heading back. Cash-only, no frills, genuinely good. One of the few city-centre breakfast spots that has not been colonised by a queue management system.

The closest decent pizza to upper Weston, 15 minutes' walk down Julian Road. Neapolitan-style, genuinely wood-fired, and not the kind of pizza that apologises for itself. The room is noisy in a good way on weekend evenings. The queue from the street at peak hours is long — book ahead or eat early.
