Lansdown is Bath's elevated northern escarpment — high enough that the views extend to Wales on a clear day, residential enough that most of it is free. Beckford's Tower is the one thing nobody who comes to Bath visits, and the one thing that sticks. The racecourse runs from April to September. The ridge walks toward the Cotswold Way need no equipment.

Beckford's Tower

William Beckford, one of the 18th century's most eccentric collectors, built this 37-metre neoclassical tower at the top of Lansdown Hill in 1827 as a retreat and library. He is buried in the grounds. The tower houses a museum of Beckford's collection and the views from the belvedere at the top — the Mendips, the Severn Estuary, Wales visible on clear days — justify the climb alone. Not well-known outside Bath. That is part of the appeal.

The escarpment at the top of Lansdown Road gives one of the longest views available on foot from Bath: across the Avon valley to the north, the Mendips to the south, and on a clear day the Severn Estuary beyond Bristol. The lane past the racecourse and along the ridge is a 20-minute walk from the top of Lansdown Road. The Battle of Lansdown (1643, English Civil War) took place on this ridge — a small monument marks the site.

Bath Racecourse sits on the plateau at the top of Lansdown, one of the highest flat-racing venues in Britain at 800 feet. The racing here is flat, the atmosphere is informal, and the view across the valley during races is better than most courses in England manage. Racedays run from April through September. Worth attending at least once. The car park fills quickly from noon; come early or take a cab from the city centre.

Lansdown Road itself is the approach — a long, steady climb through residential Lansdown with Georgian and Victorian villas on each side. From the top, the Cotswold Way passes through and there are waymarked routes north toward Cold Ashton and south back into Bath via Charlcombe. The return descent via Charlcombe Lane and Sion Hill brings you back through Larkhall — a circular 6-mile route from the city centre that takes under three hours.

The Royal High School occupies an outstanding site on Lansdown, with grounds sloping toward the city. The school itself is private, but the approach along Lansdown Road and the gate view is the best vantage point in Lansdown for architecture. Kingswood School, a short distance up the road, occupies a similar position. The concentration of independent schools on Lansdown is a significant driver of property prices in the neighbourhood.

When to visit Lansdown

Beckford's Tower opens weekends and bank holidays from April through October, 10am–5pm. It closes for the winter. Check beckfordstower.org.uk before making a special trip.

Bath Racecourse events are concentrated in summer, typically April through late September. Check race dates at bath-racecourse.co.uk. Attendance is easy and informal by evening standard.

The ridge walk is best in spring and autumn when the views are clearest and the ground is firm. Summer works but the lane can get busy with walkers on fine weekends. In winter the viewpoint is fine on clear days but the descent via Charlcombe Lane can be muddy.

Lansdown is residential. Visitors staying in Bath typically base themselves in the city centre and take a taxi or walk up. City centre hotels are 25 minutes on foot down Lansdown Road.
