Things to do in Bear Flat

Bear Flat is a south-facing plateau neighbourhood where most of what is worth doing is free. Alexandra Park has a better view of Bath than most paid viewpoints. The Saturday market is the social centre of the neighbourhood. Holloway is one of the city's oldest walking routes and barely anyone uses it. The Two Tunnels Greenway starts here and runs for 13 miles south.

Five places worth your time in Bear Flat

Alexandra Park

Bear Flat, Bath BA2 6LH

Free entry. Café open 9am–5pm, weekends year-round.

A north-facing park on the edge of the Bear Flat plateau with a view across the whole of Bath. The Royal Crescent is visible, Bathwick Hill is behind it, and nobody is selling guided tours. The café terrace faces the view and fills on sunny mornings with residents from the surrounding streets. There is a playground, a bowling green, and enough flat grass that children run in patterns that satisfy them. The view alone is better than Alexandra Park's modest reputation suggests.

Bear Flat Saturday Market

Bear Flat, Bath BA2 6LR

Free entry

A neighbourhood street market that runs Saturday mornings on the Bear Flat high street. Local produce, bread, plants, occasional artisan traders. Not a tourist market — the stall holders know the regulars and most of the customers live within five streets. The market functions as the main social event of the week for the surrounding neighbourhood. Worth visiting for the atmosphere as much as the produce. Hours: approximately 9am–1pm, most Saturdays.

The Bear pub

6 Bear Flat, Bath BA2 6LT

Pints from £4.50. Food mains £12–18.

The pub that anchors the Bear Flat high street. Not a gastro-conversion — a functioning neighbourhood pub where the regulars know each other's names, the sport is on at the right times, and the food is the kind that is cooked rather than assembled. The garden is useful in summer. It has been here, in various licensed forms, since the 19th century, and gives no indication of planning to change.

Holloway walking route

Starting from Holloway, Bear Flat, Bath BA2 4PX

Free

Holloway is one of Bath's ancient sunken lanes — a hollow way cut down through the rock by centuries of foot traffic, linking Bear Flat to the city centre in 20 minutes. The route is steep, shaded, and genuinely old. It emerges near the south side of the city walls, close to the Roman baths. Walking up it is a proper climb but the descent feels like a short cut through something that the city-centre tourist circuit has not found. Few visitors know it exists.

Two Tunnels Greenway access

Frome Road, Bath BA2 1AL

Free

The Two Tunnels Greenway runs from Bear Flat (via the Frome Road entry point) through the Combe Down Tunnel — the longest cycling tunnel in Britain at 1.6 miles, fully lit — and continues 13 miles south toward Radstock. Walking and cycling route. No heavy cycling traffic on weekday mornings. The tunnel itself is distinctive: blue-lit, silent except for bike sounds, through solid Bath stone. The Greenway is one of the best things accessible on foot from Bear Flat.

When to visit Bear Flat

Saturday morning is the time to be in Bear Flat. The market runs from approximately 9am to 1pm and the neighbourhood fills with the kind of activity that does not involve guided tour commentary. Alexandra Park fills from mid-morning on sunny days; arrive before ten for a café terrace seat with the view.

The Two Tunnels Greenway runs at all hours and in all weathers — the Combe Down Tunnel is lit internally and the route surface is good year-round. Weekday mornings are the quietest if you are on foot rather than cycling.

Holloway is best walked downhill on a weekday — the lane is narrow and in winter it can get muddy at the base. In summer it is shaded and cool even at midday, which makes it a better descent route than Bear Flat Road.

Staying near Bear Flat

Bear Flat is primarily residential. Visitors typically stay in the city centre and walk up for the Saturday market or Alexandra Park. The city centre is 20 minutes on foot via Holloway.
