Bathwick is Bath's Georgian set-piece: Pulteney Bridge, Great Pulteney Street, Sydney Gardens, the Holburne Museum, and the canal towpath east to Bathampton. Most of it is free. Most of it is crowded by ten o'clock. Here is what is worth doing and when to do it.

One of four bridges in the world with shops on both sides. The Grand Parade viewpoint on the north bank is where the postcard Bath photograph is taken — weir, bridge, Georgian terrace behind. Worth it on an early morning before the group tours arrive. The bridge itself is a Palladian design by Robert Adam, 1774.

The last surviving 18th-century pleasure garden in England. Not large — you can walk the perimeter in twenty minutes — but the canal tunnels, the iron bridges, and the Holburne Museum at one end make it feel considered. Jane Austen lived on Sydney Place and used the gardens daily. Quieter than the Royal Crescent grounds at almost every hour.

The permanent collection is strong: Old Masters, Gainsborough portraits, and decorative arts from the 18th century. Also a Bridgerton filming location — the exterior appeared as Lady Danbury's house. The café terrace overlooks Sydney Gardens and is better than most museum cafés. Check holburne.org for current exhibition programme before visiting.

A straight, wide Georgian boulevard running from Pulteney Bridge to the Holburne. It is 1,100 feet long, lined with Bath stone terraces, and largely free of tourist infrastructure despite being one of the most photographed streets in Bath. Walk it at both ends of the day — the light is different and so are the crowds.

The towpath east from Bath runs through Bathwick along the canal. Flat, accessible, and dog-friendly. From Sydney Wharf you can walk to Bathampton in 45 minutes — the Bathampton Mill pub at the end is a reasonable reason to make the trip. Narrowboats moor along the Bathwick stretch and the water is calmer than the Avon.
Pulteney Bridge and Great Pulteney Street are at their best before nine in the morning. The cruise tour groups arrive from half past nine and the bridge becomes difficult to photograph or simply walk across by ten. Sydney Gardens holds up better throughout the day.
The Holburne Museum opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10am. Mondays it's closed. The permanent collection is always free; check the temporary exhibition schedule at holburne.org before planning your visit.
The canal towpath to Bathampton is a flat 45-minute walk in either direction and works at any time of year. It's quieter on weekday mornings.
Bathwick is one of Bath's better areas to base yourself for sightseeing — central, quiet at night, and a flat walk to the Roman Baths. Hotels on or near Great Pulteney Street and Sydney Road are the best positioned.
